You will have probably noticed a lot of flying insects around in the last few weeks. Our honey bees have been very active in the recent warm weather. This abundance of insects has been helped by a mild winter and a reasonably warm Spring.

The one insect that isn't around in great numbers at the moment is the wasp. Although we are starting to see the odd queen wasp around it is too early yet for her to start producing offspring in any great quantities. The nests we see at this time of year tend to be the size of an egg or maybe a tennis ball.

So if you see insects flying i…

We are extremely pleased to announce that Environmental Pest Control are now full servicing members of the British Pest Control Association (BPCA)

The BPCA is the leading UK trade association representing those organisations with a professional interest in the eradication of public health pests.

Huge rats the size of cats are prowling Birmingham's streets.

City pest control officer Colin Watts revealed he had seen a 2ft rodent – which he said was as “wide as a brick” – on the loose.

Birmingham is battling a growing problem which saw more than 5,100 rat alerts recorded in the past year.

Calls over rats in city homes were up by almost 300 on the previous 12 months.

The worst three districts were Ladywood with 982 calls, Hodge Hill with 739 and Perry Barr with 707.

Our blog on the 29th January talks about rodents and rain and I was hoping to be able to talk about something else by now but the weather is still dominating the headlines.

The rain has a real impact on pest control work. Not only is it unpleasant to be working in the wet and windy conditions but our pests adapt and change their behaviour making our work more challenging.

Moles will move from waterlogged ground to higher drier areas which can bring them into our gardens and well drained ground such as golf courses and hotel grounds. In case you are wondering Moles are exc…
